I usually avoid most Calgary Stampede activities. But it is their centennial… and of course there’s the food. So I made a trip down to the grounds to sample some of the delights. As an avid foodie, I have to try everything, right?
- Ahhh… the vast array of deep fried sweets. Which one should I try?
- Colossal Onion. I didn’t try this one but it looked interesting. I was wanting to try the spiral spuds but the large serving size was too much for me.
- Deep fried Kool Aid. Tastes very sweet with a hint of Kool Aid. Won’t be repeating this one.
- Inside deep fried Kool Aid
- Naaco Truck Menu
- Bolly Chips. Shredded mogo, what is that? Whatever it was, it was crunchy. Salad of red cabbage and carrot with a yogurt dressing. Sesame chutney and cheddar cheese. Pretty good, but I preferred the Naaco Bites.
- Naaco bites. Butter chicken sausage coated with corn and chickpea flour, deep fried. Served with a carrot and red cabbage salad with a yogurt sauce. Great flavor, but surprisingly not spicy. http://thenaacotruck.com Will try again when they are not at the Stampede.
- Giant Sausage. I just had to take a picture of this…
- Those Wicked Waffles. An interesting idea. Waffles on a stick. You can have them sweet or savory wrapped around a hot dog.
- Pizza on a Stick. Sausage pizza on a stick. Liked the idea, but could use more flavor. There was sausage and cheese inside as well. Bye-bye low carb diet.
The winner was definitely Naaco Bites from the Naaco Truck. It was voted best new midway food of the Stampede. Naaco also uses locally produced, organic and/or sustainable foods.
